Papel picado are beautiful paper decorations, traditionally made in Mexico. They are put up for Day of the Dead, Easter and Quincineras.

Papel picado are easy to make yourself, and look really cool at a party or hung up in your room.

All experience levels welcome, and we will offer introductory instruction to beginners.

Sterling BrownSterling Allen Brown was an African-American professor, author of works on folklore, poet, and literary critic. He studied chiefly black culture of the Southern United States and was a full professor at Howard University for most of his career.

This program will look back on the life and works of Sterling Brown and his contributions as a prominent D.C.-area poet. Panel members include E. Ethelbert Miller from Howard University, Joanne Gabbin from James Madison University, and James Early from the Smithsonian Institution.

The program will include an audience Q&A followed by a meet-and-greet with the panel members.

Rescue Title

Rescue in The Philippines is a one-hour documentary of the untold story of how the five Frieder brothers, Cincinnati businessmen making two-for-a-nickel cigars in World War II Manila.

Together with Manuel Quezon, the charismatic first president of the Philippines, Paul McNutt, U.S. High Commissioner and former governor of Indiana (preparing for his own presidential campaign), and an ambitious U.S. Army Colonel named Dwight Eisenhower, they helped 1,300 Jews escape the Nazis and immigrate to the Philippines.

The film will begin at 7:10 p.m. in the large Lower Level Meeting Room of the Library, and will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers/producers Russel Hodge and Cynthia Scott-Johnson of 3-Roads Communications.

Although it runs just under an hour, the gripping documentary “Rescue in the Philippines: Refuge From the Holocaust” proves a thorough look at a lesser-known chapter in Holocaust-era history. -- Los Angeles Times

Babar and friends doing yogaJoin us for a parent-child yoga class with instructor Sarah Alim for children ages 2-9 and their caregivers. Please dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat or towel.  

Due to space considerations, we will give out free tickets on a first-come, first-served basis the day of the class. Because this is an exercise class, a signed waiver is required for each participant, and parents should sign one for their child. Waiver forms can be picked up from the children's desk and must be turned in before you receive a ticket.
