A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Tuesday for the first phase of development in the Town of Babylon’s Wyandanch revitalization project.
The groundbreaking will start at noon just north of the Long Island Rail Road station, at the site where two apartment buildings will be constructed. The event will feature music and activities as well as speeches from federal, state and local officials.
Master developer Albanese Organization Inc. of Garden City is investing $73 million in the buildings, which will have a combined 176 rental units and more than 37,000 square feet of retail space. The buildings will mark the first major construction for Wyandanch Rising, the town’s massive public-private redevelopment project that has been more than 10 years in the making and that aims to revitalize the downtown of one of the most economically distressed communities on Long Island.

The town is finishing up another key part of the project, a sewer line along Straight Path, and a transit plaza and LIRR parking garage are also planned.
