When she turned 35 in July, Christine Miserandino didn’t know how to celebrate her birthday.
It may seem like just another birthday to most people, but for Miserandino, who was diagnosed at the age of 15 with lupus, just getting to 35 was a milestone.
Instead of a birthday party, Miserandino decided to celebrate with an “unbirthday party” that raised money for the Long Island Lupus Alliance.
She...

It’s my final day in Great Neck, as part of our monthly Town Focus series.
I can say that my week has been filled with exploring new places, getting in touch with the community on a closer level and teasing my taste buds with tantalizing foods at lunchtime.
I learned more about the history of Great Neck than I could have ever imagined with the help of Alice Kasten, president of the Great...

With the summer crowds and the traffic they create about to leave the Hamptons, state Department of Transportation officials are planning to resurface a busy three-mile stretch of Montauk Highway that serves as the western gateway to East Hampton Village.
The work will be done in early fall on the part of the two-lane Montauk Highway running between Stephen Hands Path and State Route 114.

The terms of a union contract covering about 100 Glen Cove city employees have been set since last year — with the memorandum of agreement signed by the mayor in November and approved in a City Council vote in December — but they may not be made official until late September at the earliest.
“It’s not because we’re disagreeing on stuff, we’re agreeing on stuff. It’s just about housekeeping,”...

It took Tom Jennings three years to join Great Neck’s Alert Fire Company No. 1 -- not because he wasn’t capable, but because he was on a waiting list.
He joined the company 49 years ago at age 31. He now spends his time not only on call to respond to fires, but also collecting firefighter memorabilia and history to honor the departed.
He began a historical committee 20 years ago, which...

A statue of a Lloyd Harbor girl killed by a drunken driver was unveiled this month at the Huntington Town park that carries her name.
Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone was joined by family, friends and members of the Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club at Breezy Park — named in memory of Brianna “Breezy” Titcomb.
Brianna, 13, was killed in 2005 by a drunken driver while on vacation with her...

Brookhaven Republicans Thursday called on Democratic town supervisor candidate Brian Beedenbender to release his payroll records to justify his time off after 2 1/2 years as chief of staff to exiting town supervisor Mark Lesko.
“With less than three years in town government I question how he could accrue enough time to spend the next two months campaigning,” Brookhaven Republican chairman...

Forty Town of Islip employees have participated in a voluntary furlough program this summer, saving the town roughly $30,000, town officials said Thursday.
The town began in June offering the option to employees to take unpaid days off as part of what town officials say is an effort to cut costs as the town grapples with a $26 million budget deficit.
The program is open to all employees...

As I continue exploring Great Neck this week, on my second to last day, I plan to meet even more people for the historical story I’m working on.
The first person I’m meeting is Tom Jennings, a volunteer firefighter at Alert Fire Department Co. 1, and the department’s historian. He’s giving me a tour of the firehouse, showing me historic photos, old plaques and pictures of previous members.
If...
