Good morning and greetings from Bayville!

Today kicks off Newsday’s five-day “Town Focus” in the waterfront village of Bayville. Although Bayville may be small — only 1.5 square miles in size and home to roughly 6,600 residents — there is plenty to see and do here, and there are quite a few characters.

I met one of Bayville’s biggest characters Saturday night. Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling...

Coming up: Town Focus in Bayville

Sandy beaches, stunning views of the Long Island Sound, and an amusement park. This is how I will be spending the next week. No, I won’t be cashing in any vacations days, but rather I’ll be working in a place just about 30 minutes from Newsday’s Melville office: Bayville.

The village of Bayville is only 1.5 square miles and it’s almost completely surrounded by water, so as you can imagine...

It's been a busy week, but we made it. It's the last day of our Town Focus of Bellport.

Today, I plan to finish up a story on the 50th-year reunion of the Bellport High School Class of 1963 and another on a pair of eagles nesting along Little Neck Run.

I spent this week touring Bellport Village, trying local foods, checking out its artistic side and learning more than I ever thought...

Artists have flocked to or settled down in Bellport Village for its picturesque views and laid back culture since as early as the late 1890s. Frederick Kost, Walter Granville-Smith and William Glackens were just a few of the most famous artists drawn to the seaside community.

“The light reflecting off the bay was just so wonderful that it was one of the many reasons famous artists were drawn...

I was thrilled to see so many Bellporters approach me and recognize my face today. It’s evident Bellport Village is a close knit community where everybody seems to know everybody -- even a visitor. I like that.

Well, Bellport, keep following me because our “Town Focus” is only half-way done.

For those of you who missed it, earlier today I spent time with a group of ladies that belong...

Every May during the 1900s, New York City residents returned to Bellport by the trainload to spend their summer at hotels along the bay, cottages, or boarding homes. White picket fences lined Bellport Lane, sailboats were moored at the Bellport docks, and the ferry transported beachgoers to Fire Island.

For three months out of the year, Bellport came alive.

And to celebrate the pleasures...

Bellport Mayor Will Veitch played in the sand as a kid at Mother’s Beach, and as a father spent time with his own kids there, so he was thrilled to see its continued renovation.

“It’s one of the few places you can go to really enjoy the Great South Bay,” he said. “It’s a beautiful beach and we all love to spend our time there in the summer.”

Located off South Howells Point in Bellport,...

As part of our weeklong visit to Bellport this week, I spent today stopping in businesses along Station Road, South Country Road and Bellport Lane, and taking in the view at Mother’s Beach.

Mayor Will Veitch, who has lived in the village most his life, said upgrades to Mother’s Beach will be unveiled on July 5.

“It’s one of the few places you can go to really enjoy the Great South Bay,”...
