On any given day in the United States, millions of people eat at McDonalds or Subway.

And while those dining at Subway might think that they’re making the healthier choice for themselves and their kids, new research from the University of California, Los Angeles, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health says that this might not be the case.

Throughout the study led by Dr. Lenard...

Quitting smoking is a task that has long plagued those who light, but while most choose a plan that feels comfortable to them, what happens when a female smoker is pregnant?

Suddenly the decision to quit becomes one of necessity rather than free will.

Risking side-effects such as spontaneous abortion, premature birth, low birth weight and in some cases Sudden Infant Death Syndrome...

Mud run was fun, but no walk in park

It wasn't the mud or the obstacles or the 5-kilometer distance that bothered me. It was the hills. My goodness, those hills.

I ran in my first mud run at The Survival Race in Riverhead over the weekend. It was fun and filthy and fantastic. But I must confess it was tougher than I thought it would be. I like my 5K runs flat and fast. Running uphill is unpleasant. It's grueling. It makes me...

To most of the world, pyramids are synonymous with ancient Egypt, but to fitness buffs it’s the favored form of resistance training.

The name may be foreign to some, but pyramid training has struck the fitness scene as the most popular method of resistance training. Unlike those training methods that cause a muscle to fail in a single set, pyramids spark the same reaction over the course of...

After incorporating vegetarian meals into its weekly lunch

No more mystery meat -- or any meat -- for the kids at PS 244 in Flushing.

After incorporating vegetarian meals into its weekly lunch rotation for the past five years, the elementary school last week became the first public school in New York City, and likely in the country, according to city officials, to adopt an all-vegetarian cafeteria menu.

Feeling bad for the cheeseburger-deprived?...

Mud run in Riverhead

The Survival Race is a family-focused 5K obstacle

Here's the idea: Run a 5K that includes crawling through mud and climbing and jumping over stuff. What's not to like about that?

This Saturday is The Survival Race in Riverhead at the 4-H camp on Sound Avenue.

Runners go in waves of 300 at 30-minute intervals starting at 9 a.m. You get a T-shirt and, if you finish, dog tags. There's even a band.

This will by my first mud run. Has...
