Possible demolition of Conn. home stirs dispute
MILFORD, Conn. - (AP) -- A house built when George Washington was president is the focus of a dispute in Milford.
The home's owner says he wants to tear down the 1790 structure, saying engineers he hired believe the house is beyond saving and a safety hazard.
The Connecticut Post reports (http://bit.ly/14QiMMr ) that the kicker is that home owner William Farrell is first vice president of the Milford Historical Society, which advocates preservation of old buildings.
Farrell's wife told the paper they wouldn't comment on the situation. But it has some townspeople miffed.
City Historian Richard Platt says the house is in much better shape than the Farrells say. He plans to issue a 90-day delay on the demolition of the house as soon as he can file the paperwork.
Platt says no historical house is ever beyond repair.
