Steve was homeless for about one year. A Washington, D.C. native, Steve grew up in an area called “Simple City” in Southeast D.C.
He had various jobs as a young man, one of which was for Metro. Steve says he was headed towards homelessness when he first started using drugs. He became homeless in 2006 and learned a lot while living on the streets.
Steve preferred to stay on the streets, rather than using shelters, because he believes that homeless shelters can rob you of your sanity. After getting off of drugs and alcohol, he found housing and has been able to make his own life decisions.
Currently, Steve runs an organization called “Striving to End Vagrancy and Homelessness Everywhere” (S.T.E.V.E.). He has made it his life’s mission to help homeless people get off the streets.
