Doggie Diaries XXIX: Adventures at the Library

I swished into the library tonight wearing my fashionable fall vest for the last time this season. With the chill in the air, I know it’s time to un-bury my winter wardrobe. It’s sweater time!! And in my four years of living, I have accumulated a fine and festive collection, all warm and cozy, that I am eager to wear.

The kids were so happy to see me, their Belly Rub Queen. They shouted, Ava! Ava! Ava! I felt like a million bucks.

I sat next to Miss Julie and listened carefully to her read Dog Loves Books by Louise Yates. Later I sat in a girl’s lap while she read Digging-Est Dog by Al Perkins and then, for a change of scenery, I hopped up on a cushion on a chair and listened to a pair of brothers read Danny and the Dinosaur by Syd Hoff to me.

As I am one of the first PAL dogs to work at the Chevy Chase Library, I know my way around  the children’s room and am quite at home wandering through the maze of bookshelves. So while the kids take me on walks, I try to take note of the books I want to read next.

I was extremely lady-like all night. Inside, I was dying to ask for a T-Bone T-R-E-A-T. I showed great restraint. Ladies do not beg. Finally, when I was about to leave, I gave Miss Julie one of my most sincere looks with my dark eyes… and she said, “Ava, did you get a treat…?” I indicated delicately with my eyes, as if to reply, “Why, no ma’am, I didn’t… however, I’d be very much obliged…” Miss Julie scurried over to get a treat and insisted on giving it to me herself. And, mmmm-mmmm. Delicious. Well worth the wait!

Oh…. And I almost forgot… the highlight of the evening. A shiny, beautiful gift from Miss Julie (and with the generous support of the Friends of the Chevy Chase Library): a locket with my name engraved. I’ll treasure it forever.

I love the library! And I love Miss Julie!
