A Visit from the Planks

Mary talking to a young pirate princessThursday night, Palisades Library sailed the seven seas with Mary Quattlebaum, the author of Pirate Vs. Pirate. Quattlebaum showed up in full pirate gear to celebrate her tale of Mean Mo and Bad Bart.

Several young buccaneers showed up for grog and seafaring tales. Some pirates even chose to dress up for the occasion.

The crew enjoyed treats constructed by our ship's cook... pirate cupcakes and some (ginger) ale.

As the author of Pirate Vs. Pirate, Quattlebaum recounted the story of Mean Mo and Bad Bart with members of the audience acting out the story. The battles raged on as Bad Bart and Mean Mo wrestled sharks and threw cannon balls to find out who was the best pirate of them all.

Crabclaw, a pirate companion of the author, came for the show as well. During the evening, the kids asked him a lot of questions, including an interesting conversation about the purpose of a cell phone.

"Is it to call your shipmates?" He asked one boy.

All and all, it was an enjoyable night on the seven seas for these young buccaneers. Mary Quattlebaum, or Captain Q as she was called, provided a night full of excitement for all who attended. Not only did we have the chance to converse in pirate for a full hour, we met an accomplished author who is excited about writing and the stories she crafts.
