Bookmaking for Kids at the Northeast Library

children and adults making handmade books

On Monday, June 20, the Northeast Neighborhood Library hosted Sushmita Mazumdar, a book artist, who shared handmade books with local children and taught them how to make their own.

She displayed pictures of her home country, India, and shared a story about a journey to the Himalayan mountains, where the prayer wheels and prayer flags of the villagers inspired her to design a new book project.

Afterward, she led the children in creating a simple folded book, and on the inside each child wrote and drew his or her wishes, dreams and hopes for the future.

We enjoyed our visit with Mazumdar and look forward to future summer reading programs.
