Jason Wallace's novel Out of Shadows presents a forceful, tension-filled account of life in a boarding school during the 1980s in Zimbabwe. The unflinching depiction of brutality among school boys is coupled with a nuanced account of political divisions among school administrators and community groups.
Reading group members noted how tough it was to read the first third of the book but then being unable to stop reading this sophisticated look at Robert Mugabe's reign. This work is one that brings to "light" a country that has been relegated to the "shadows" by the world media.
