Erin's Pick of the Week

"Lips Touch: Three Times" by Laini Tayor

Welcome to the very first "Erin's Pick of the Week"!

I'm Erin Bush, teen services library associate at West End Neighborhood Library and voracious reader.  In this space, I'll be bringing you short reviews of great books--teen books that adults would enjoy, adult books that teens would like, and books that I just plain think are great.

My first pick is Lips Touch: Three Times by Laini Taylor, and I'm not the only one who thinks it's great. It was nominated for a National Book Award for Young People's Literature this year. Lips Touch is a collection of 2 short stories and one short novel. Each story is centered around kisses--mysterious kisses, supernatural kisses, dangerous kisses.

If you loved Twilight, definitely pick this one up; just be aware that in Taylor's worlds, fairytale kisses don't alway lead to happily-ever-after.  Here's a sample of the first story "Goblin Fruit"--just to whet your appetite:

"The goblins want girls who dream so hard about being pretty their yearning leaves a palpable trail, a scent goblins can follow like sharks on a soft stream of blood.  The girls with hungry eyes who pray each night to wake up as someone. Urgent, unkissed, wishful girls.  Like Kizzy."

One other great thing about this book--it's visually stunning.  Each story includes several pages of illustrations by artist Jim DiBartolo (who happens to be Ms. Taylor's husband); he also did the gorgeous cover.  Down to the cream-colored paper and tinted ink, it's simply a beautiful object to hold in your hands.
