Famous Graphic Novelist Sends a Hello

The Graphic Novel Book Club has been exploring a variety of different books. This last month, we blasted into space with Astronaut Academy by Dave Roman. We had an in depth discussion about the art techniques used by the Graphic Novelist. For example, Dave Roman uses Renaissance art techniques in several of his panels, such as chiaroscuro (when one half of an object is blinded in light and the other in shadow). The kids looked at Renaissance paintings to compare how both used this lighting technique. One of the kids noticed that it makes the panel a lot more dramatic feeling than just the regular lighting.
The kids enjoyed discussing which one of the unique characters we would be, if we were in the story and which class is the most fun to take. But even more fun than the vibrant discussion, was the surprise at the end of the meeting….
Graphic Novelist, Dave Roman sent unique autographed drawings … one for each member of the Book Club. The kids were so excited, we decided to make a thank you video for Dave Roman, featuring the rocket bus from Astronaut Academy…
Blast off into some good reading, and a big thanks to Dave Roman for his special hello.
