Pop!: Meet Laura

Pop! Street Fashion is an experimental collection of patron street fashion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. It is devoted to photographically documenting the sartorial narratives of patrons who visit the library. Please email My Nguyen for more information.
On one very hot summer day, MLK library visitor Laura was a refreshing sight. Decked out in basics—white t-shirt, circle skirt, lace-up sandals—Laura’s outfit intimated the very lovely, very simple pleasures of summer: eating frozen popsicles, looking for seashells along the shore, or just attending a casual, but no doubt stylish, barbeque with friends. The addition of a pair of chunky black frames added urban chic appeal to an otherwise beach-ready outfit. Doubtless, Laura’s understated sartorial approach delineates a famous quote by renowned fashion designer Coco Chanel: “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”

What’s your style inspiration?
I’m inspired to use what I have. [Editor's note: Yes! Agreed!]
How would you describe your style?
I would say it’s pretty casual, since I’m a stay-at-home mom. Since it’s really hot this summer, it’s also motivated by staying cool. I’d say my style is a little bit preppy, sometimes a bit daring, but mostly casual. Comfortable. Slightly refined.
What are you currently reading?
Well, I checked out Italy for the Gourmet Traveler because I’m doing a yoga retreat in Italy in September and the most important part is obviously the eating. So this is my guide to what to eat.
What’s your favorite book?
That’s a tough one. I have so many favorite books. I’d say a book that I really like that I continually recommend to people that they really like is Old School by Tobias Wolff. It’s about being a teen, and reading, so people who especially like to read can relate to it. It’s not at all related to the Will Ferrell movie.
Why do you use the library? What do you like about it?
The library is a good a way to control my book-buying tendencies, which would go to the extreme if I let them run rampant. And it’s convenient. I can walk in, walk out with four books. And I find things that I otherwise wouldn’t find: I find things browsing here that I wouldn’t find online.
Who are your style icons?
I’d say my style icons are probably people who dress nothing like me. I like the way Olivia Palermo dresses. It always looks sort of fresh. Grace Kelly is an icon. She looks very classic. You look at a photo of her 50 years later, and she still looks good.
