If you’re looking for great book for teens, then look no further.
Cinder is the first book in a new series, by Marissa Meyer, called the Lunar Chronicles. The story is roughly based upon the Cinderella fairytale... but now she’s a cyborg! Cinder knows very little about her childhood, so when she wakes up at the age of 11 with mechanical implants and is living with her wicked stepmother and two semi-wicked stepsisters in the city of New Beijing, life couldn't get any worse.
Cinder is a cyborg, so she naturally excels at all things mechanical and because of this, she is forced to open a booth at a local market in order to earn her keep and make money to support the chronic shopping habits of her awful stepfamily. All Cinder’s wages go directly into her wicked stepmother’s bank account. She never sees a penny of the money and is forced to live with her stepsister's hand-me-downs as well as mechanical parts that no longer fit her developing body. Life is a constant train wreck for her. She sleeps on a pile of greasy blankets, her clothes are ripped and tattered, and her only friend is a robot, named Iko.
One day, while Cinder is working in the market, the young and handsome Prince Kai of the Eastern Commonwealth comes to her booth disguised as a commoner to enlist her help. He asks her to look at a broken robot that he claims has classified information vital to the country’s future. Cinder accepts the job and simultaneously tries to keep her cyborg heritage a secret from the charming prince.
At the end of the book, Cinder is frantically trying to make it to the royal ball in time to warn the prince of the oncoming danger from the Moon. Will her new lunar abilities be enough tip the balance in her favor? You’ll have to check it out to find out! Click on the book title and author to link to the library record for this book.
