'The Sense of an Ending' by Julian Barnes
Tony Webster, a middle-aged man, thought an amicable divorce and retirement would give him peace until he is confronted with a past he thought he had left behind.
Life becomes complicated when Tony receives a mysterious legacy which forces him to re-examine his entire life. Did he create a past which allowed him to live with himself? Tony says that the difference between youth and age is "that when we are young we invent different futures for ourselves; when we are old, we invent different pasts for others."
