National Night Out 2012 Kickoff

The 2012 National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5 p.m-9 p.m. at the Anacostia Neighborhood Library. It is an evening for law enforcement agencies and communities share an evening with to celebrate, commemorate and develop partnerships.
National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
This year, Chief Lanier directed that the citywide kickoff will be hosted by the Seventh District. The event will feature recognition of National Night Out community awards, crime prevention initiatives, health and wellness screenings, safety demonstrations, games (human-size chess), food, fun, entertainment and a lifetime achievement award celebrating the contributions of the late Chuck Brown. Free Chuck Brown posters, created for MPD in 2009, will be given away.
