In many ways, The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge is a typical Sherlock Holmes tale from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle showcases the brilliance of the great Holmes throughout the story, yet, in this particular instance, Holmes has met a worthy protégé in the form of Inspector Baynes. While Holmes typically outsmarts most law enforcement, Baynes manages to stay one step ahead of Holmes in this story, which allows the reader to see a more humble side to the great detective’s character, and makes one wonder if he sees an heir for himself in the young inspector.
Another interesting aspect of this story is that despite its age, the theme of a despotic leader (in this case, the Tiger of San Pedro) on the run from his former country resonates in many places of the world today. Even today, authoritarian leaders who are forced from power often raid the coffers of their people before fleeing to a friendly country for safe haven. Doyle shows the reader the anger and determination of the subjects of such a repressive regime and their willingness to sacrifice themselves in order to bring their former leaders to justice.
