Azar Nafisi grew up in Tehran under the former Shah in Iran became a university professor of English Literature during the time of the Iranian Revolution. She led an underground reading and discussion group of women that focus on Western Literature including Lolita, Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice and Daisy Miller.
Her book, Reading Lolita in Tehran provides a look at how a courageous woman silently fought for the liberating power of literature in the face of censorship.
