Growing Healthy Schools Week
Published on Friday, October 5, 2012 - 4:43pm
Growing Healthy Schools Week combines DC School Garden Week and DC Farm to School Week, and ties in to the recent Healthy Schools Act.
DC Public Library is a partner for Growing Healthy Schools Week, and we will be featuring special programming and book displays about farming, gardening and plants at various DCPL locations all week! You are invited to attend library programs and check out books to extend your child's Growing Healthy Schools experience beyond the classroom.
Here at Shepherd Park/Juanita E. Thornton Neighborhood Library, we will be offering two Growing Healthy Schools Week Programs:
Growing Healthy Schools Story Time
Oct. 16 at 11 a.m.
Ages infant to 5 (with parent/caregiver)
At this special story time, we will read our favorite books about gardening and plants. After story time, please join us for an art activity. We will be using paint, so please be sure to dress appropriately for a possible mess.
Start an Orange Plant!
Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Ages 6 to 12
Listen to an awesome story and sprout an orange plant using food scraps and household materials! Take your plant home to watch it sprout, then replant it into a pot. By springtime, you could have an orange tree to plant in your garden!
Don't forget to check out some books to learn more about how plants grow, how food gets from the farm to your table and more. These are some of our favorites:
|To Market, To Market by Nikki McClure||A Seed is Sleepy by Dianna Hutts Aston||
The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall
