DC Read Programs at the Chevy Chase Neighborhood Library

The DC Public Library is sponsoring DC Reads 2012 showcasing Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. DC Reads will run from October 15 - November 15, 2012 and the Chevy Chase Library will have several programs dedicated to Reading Lolita in Tehran and other works that explore some of its themes.
First off, both our general book club and our history/biography book club will be reading the book. The CCH Book Club will be meeting to discuss the book on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. The History/Biography Book Club will be meeting on Nov. 13 at 1 pm. Patrons are welcome at either meeting. Copies of the book can be found at the display near the information desk and the eBook can be downloaded here. We will also be screening three movies films that deal with some of the themes in Reading Lolita in Tehran:
Author Azar Nasfisi mentions 1001 Arabian Nights several times in Reading Lolita in Tehran. Revisit these classic stories by attending our screening of the 1942 film The Arabian Nights on Monday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
The 2006 Iranian film Offside (PG) deals with a group of girls who attempt to sneak into a World Cup match, despite the fact that they are forbidden by law to attend. We will be showing the film on Monday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
The 2007 film Persepolis (PG-13) tells the story of a girl’s coming of age during the Iranian revolution. We will be screening this film on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
