On Nov. 1, the Mystery Book Club goes off the fiction track to read Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott.
This meticulously researched history of the Everleigh sisters' eponymous club offers a vivid picture of America's journey from Victorian-era propriety to 20th-century modernity and brings Chicago's notorious Levee District to life. The furor that raged around the Everleigh Club had repercussions throughout American society, including the formation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. USA Today says, "Change the hemlines, add 100 years, and the book could be filed under current affairs."
The Cleveland Park Mystery Book Club meets the first Thursday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., at Barnes & Noble, 12th and E streets NW.
