The Walking Dead Universe

The Walking Dead LogoIf you have never heard of The Walking Dead or think that you are too behind to catch up, here is a brief overview on how to best to jump into this series' world of the undead.

The Walking Dead began in 2003 as a comic book series created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. The comic books have morphed into a television drama series on AMC and a series of novels that go into more depth about particular locations and characters in the series. The series centers around character Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma to find the world dominated by flesh-eating "walkers," resembling the zombies of George A. Romero's horror movies. He sets out to find his family and encounters many other survivors along the way.

A good place to begin would be with the comic books. The comic books will give you in-depth look at each character’s growth and individual personality and the overall direction the writers want to take:

While you read the comic books, you can also follow along by watching the television drama series based off of the comics. Events in the television show do not follow the comic books exactly, but is still a highly addictive show that is a huge cable television success. Start with The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season.

After you finish watching the first season and catching up with the comics, you can get dive into the novels that look more closely at events that happen in the television series and the comic books.
