Electa_ArenalThe_Answer_La_Respuesta_Sor_JuanaElecta Arenal, Latinamericanist, emeritus professor of Hispanic literatures and translator, is one of the pioneers of women's studies and a leading scholar on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Mexico's first major poet and playwright.

Recognized early on as a prodigy, Juana Inés de la Cruz spent time at the viceroy's court before entering the convent. Criticized for her intellectual activities, which included continually writing poems and plays, and for neglecting her religious duties, she wrote a celebrated, subversive and even humorous defense of intellectual freedom for women as well as men, Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz (1691).
