'Cane' by Jean Toomer

Originally published in 1923, Cane is generally judged to be an innovative, landmark work of the Harlem Renaissance.  The author, Jean Toomer, emerged as the first writer of the period to delineate black life perceptively.  Toomer was significantly influenced by the the city of Washington, where he was born.
