Get more background on Woodbury and The Governor with these books:
The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga
This book works on two levels: If you are a fan of The Walking Dead and have read the comic books, it gives you some background to the sadistic Governor. On the second level, if you have not read The Walking Dead, it gives you an inkling of what's possible to come on the series and may make you want to run out and just buy the Walking Dead Omnibus.
This book starts out with a group of guys (four) and one of them has a daughter. They are basically trying to figure out what happened, why there are undead and deal with day-to-day survival. Be warned: The end will knock the wind out of you. You really don't see what's coming.
It's a fast read and enjoyable. You don't have to be a fan of the show to enjoy. (Review by Tracy Lucas)
The Walking Dead: the Road to Woodbury by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga
Lilly arrives at Woodbury as The Governor is actualizing on his power. Seeing injustice being done by The Governor, Lilly forms an alliance with some fellow residents to challenge The Governor and the beginnings of his horrific reign.
If you want to know what life in Woodbury was like, read this book. However, I felt as though I were pushing myself through the book because something was lacking. Some of Lilly's actions confused me: Why should she avenge a death after it happens instead of preventing it? The ending was interesting to me, but I felt it could all have been wrapped in a better package. (Review by Tracy Lucas)
Refresh your memory by reading the compilation comics that predate the show:
