Under the pretext of civilizing Africans and saving them from Arab slave traders, King Leopold II of Belgium enlisted the help of Henry Stanley in colonizing a region of Africa 76 times the size of Belgium for his own personal benefit. Leopold ravaged this area, known as the Congo, seizing property, enslaving and murdering the natives, and stripping the land of its wealth.
Standing against Leopold, and later joined by others, was Edmund Morel, who began an international campaign to stop these atrocities.
We meet at 7 p.m. in the Medium Conference Room.
