Set against an austere New England landscape, Edith Wharton’s classic novella explores the themes of loneliness, quiet desperation, and sexual desire through the life of Ethan Frome. Barely getting by with what his farm produces, Ethan’s life with his difficult, hypochondriac wife Zeena is barely tolerable. Until her cousin joins the household as a hired girl.
