Aspiring Authors Circle to Meet at MLK

New group will offer peer support for emerging writers

AAC logoCalling all authors!

There comes a time when every writer must come out of the safe circle of family and friends and into a circle of their peers. A new group at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library has been established to do just that. The Aspiring Authors Circle will meet once monthly as a whole in the Popular Library lounge area or in Room 221 to encourage fledging writers to meet, network and support each other's work.

The Aspiring Authors Circle is the Venn center of four circles designed to support Fiction Writers, Poets, Playwrights and Bloggers.  Each of these breakout groups will meet once a month, with the exception of the Playwrights, who will meet weekly. The circles are open to new or recently published writers and an author only needs to attend a meeting to become a member.

The inaugural meeting of the Circle will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1.  We will gather at the lounge area in the Popular Library, located on the first floor, just off the Great Hall. We will then tour the building, to allow new members to meet the skilled staff, see the rich collection, and take a look at the meeting spaces that will be made available to Circle members.

The Library also offers a variety of classes and programs of great interest to fledging authors. For example:

  • Aspiring novelists can take advantage of space and resources made available to allow their participation in the biannual NaNoWriMo events.
  • All writers can take classes offered in the Digital Commons on the Adobe Creative Suite and the Espresso Book Machine designed to promote self-publication.
  • The first class designed specifically for Aspiring Author Circle members is "So You Wanna Write an eBook?", scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Digital Commons.

So if you are ready to write the next chapter in your life, please join us for this great adventure. Laurels may follow.
