DC Health Link Assisters from Community of Hope
Published on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - 2:45pm
Starting Oct. 28, Bellevue will host certified DC Health Link Assisters from Community of Hope every Monday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Assisters will be around to answer any insurance questions and help families enroll in a health plan.
What is DC Health Link?
DC Health Link is the new “exchange” established under the Affordable Care Act by the District of Columbia for private insurance that serves individuals, families and small businesses. DC Health Link also determines eligibility for Medicaid for most individuals and offers new financial assistance to help pay for private insurance plans.
What is the Affordable Care Act, also called “Obama Care”?
- Gives states the option to extend Medicaid coverage to people at higher income levels.
- Establishes an exchange or marketplace in each state, where individuals and small businesses can apply for insurance, get help paying for insurance, compare plans and purchase plans that suit their needs.
- Prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage or charging higher premiums to individuals based on health status.
- Requires that everyone is insured. Those who opt out of health insurance will be fined.
Open Enrollment began Oct. 1 and ends March 31, 2014. Come by the library and learn more about how the Affordable Care Act affects you and your community.
