East of the River Police Boys and Girls Steelband Live!

Date:
Sunday, November 3, 2013 - 2:00pm

Join us as the East of the River Police Boys and Girls Steelband performs music at the Expanded Hours Sunday Celebration at the Deanwood Neighborhood Library!

The Steelband will perform from 2 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. Then, band members will take a break and interact with audience (share the history of pan, etc.). After the ten-minute break, the Steelband will proceed to perform from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Founded 23 years ago by executive director Dr. Gladys Bray as a substance abuse prevention program for at-risk youth, the Steelband has grown to be much more than just another program to keep young people off the streets of Washington's inner-city neighborhoods. Artists, administrators and audiences consider the East of the River Police Boys and Girls Steelband a minor miracle of a musical institution that continues its mission of enhancing young lives. The steel pan originated in the Caribbean island of Trinidad and is the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the twentieth century.
