New DC Public Library Online Catalog Launches November 7

Upgrade Will Involve Planned Outages from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6.

On Thurs., Nov. 7, the DC Public Library will release a new and improved online catalog. The transition to the new catalog will start on Nov. 4 with library customers having limited or no access to the online catalog during the upgrade.

The improved catalog will make it easier for library customers find books, eBooks, DVDs, audiobooks and more. The new catalog will also let customers search from the library’s Facebook page, renew checked out items with one click, text details about an item to a cell phone and find an item even if they don’t have the correct spelling. The catalog will also be available in multiple languages including Spanish, French and Chinese.

In order to switch to the new catalog, the following outages are planned:

From Nov. 4, 9 a.m. to noon, the online catalog will be completely offline. That means library customers:
CAN: Check out books at their library.
CAN: Register for a library card at dclibrary.org/getacard.
CAN'T: Search online or access their library account.
CAN'T: Place holds.
CAN'T: Pay fees online.

From Nov. 4, noon to Nov. 6, 9 p.m., there will be limited access to the online catalog. That means library customers:
CAN: Check out books at their library.
CAN: Access the online catalog.
CAN: Register for a library card at dclibrary.org/getacard.
CAN: Access their library account.
CAN’T: Change library account information.
CAN'T: Place holds.

From Nov. 6, 9 p.m. to Nov. 7, 9 a.m., the online catalog will be completely offline. That means library customers:
CAN: Register for library card at dclibrary.org/getacard.
CAN'T: Search online.
CAN’T: Access their library account.
CAN’T: Place holds.
CAN'T: Pay fees online.

On Nov. 7, 9 a.m., the new and improved catalog goes live.

As customers use the new catalog, the library is encouraging people to share their thoughts and ways it can continue to be improved. Feedback can be submitted on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #newdcplcatalog or online through the library’s website.
