fantastic world
The Fantastic World of Juan Orol [Mexico, 2012, 90 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles, adults] starts in 1982 as actor-director Juan Orol recounts his childhood in Galicia [Spain], his exile in Cuba and then life in Mexico where he fails as a baseball player, boxer, bullfighter and gangster before he winds up in the movies where he becomes an entertaining failure -- a sort of Mexican Ed Wood.

Orol
is thought of similarly: A cult director working with low budgets, poor continuity and dubious skill.

He is nevertheless considered part of the "Golden Age of Mexican Cinema," and particularly associated with a genre called "rumberas." His second and third wives, Maria Antonieta Pons and Rosa Carmina, were Cuban rumberas stars.

Come explore this fantastic world on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. in the first floor meeting room.
