Second Book Club Meeting!

Anansi Boys CoverThe new West End Book Club will be hosting its second meeting on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. This month we will be reading Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, the well-known graphic artist and author, and the voice behind the popular Sandman series.

His book Stardust was made into a movie starring Claire Danes in 2007. Anansi Boys was published in 2005 and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. It revisits many of the characters that Gaiman introduced in his 2001 novel American Gods, but Anansi Boys is not a sequel and can stand alone from its predecessor.

Anansi Boys tells the story of a 30-something man named Fat Charlie who discovers that his life is anything but normal. He learns that his father is actually the trickster god Anansi shortly after attending his father’s funeral. He also meets his long-lost magical brother named Spider, who manages to destroy Fat Charlie’s job, engagement and house within days of their reunion. As Fat Charlie attempts to get his life back to normal, his actions trigger a hilarious chain of events that will change everything he thought he knew about himself.

Despite its fantastical plot elements and characters, this is a novel that is easy to relate to, especially around this time of year. Dysfunctional families come in all shapes and sizes — and Fat Charlie’s mythological family is no exception!
