Pop!: Meet Markeith

Pop! Street Fashion is an experimental collection of patron street fashion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. It is devoted to photographically documenting the sartorial narratives of patrons who visit the library. Please email My Nguyen for more information.
Markeith, 20, was a glorious vision in army green and black. His look was decidedly tough and punk, which is always intriguing to behold. Who but a fearless sartorial genius would pair a fishnet shirt laid over a Bob Marley T-shirt? Beyond punk, however, Markeith displayed his creative style with the zipties over his knee-high black combat boots, along with lots and lots of cool accessories in a variety of textures.
"Street punk" was the term he used to describe today's look; it fits, but more importantly, it commands attention.
More on his fashion inspirations and other life musings after the jump.
What would you call your look today?
Who are your fashion inspirations?
My fashion inspirations are Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Avril Lavigne and Evanescence.
Evanescence! I haven’t thought about that band in years. Why do they inspire you?
It’s edgy, it’s different. They’re not really in the public eye. But it’s a shocker. I like stuff that’s really shocking and extravagant.
And what would you say influences you?
Music, and definitely poetry, and horror movies. I love horror movies.
What kind of music do you like?
I like all types. If I had to pick and choose, I’d say rock and roll and pop music. Lyrics-wise, I really like Bruce Springsteen.
Your favorite horror movie?
So you’re not afraid of horror movies?
Do you have any tips for people who are afraid of horror movies?
For me, I would say it’s make-believe. There are only humans behind the monsters. It’s not real. So, just don’t have any fear. Just be yourself. If you see a monster, just say, hey, it’s not real. I’m a human just like you; it’s just make-up.
Why’d you come to MLK today?
I came to MLK to meet new people, have fun and job hunt. And get away from stressin’!
What do you like best about MLK?
More computers, more books, more opportunities to learn about things.
Describe yourself in five words or less.
Loyal. Nice. Down-to-earth. Creative. And loving.
You dress very colorfully. Are you afraid of haters?
No. I used to be really insecure. And I still have my days. But you just have to let go and let God. That’s how I see it.
Any words of wisdom for Pop?
Don’t let the fear of the outside control you on the inside.
