The District of Columbia was almost no one's “first choice” for the new nation's capital. It had a rocky start, and when the British invaded in 1814, Congress considered abandoning the city and moving elsewhere. The Civil War years provide another tumultuous chapter in our story.

Through the years, we’ve had our ups and downs and grown into the city we are today. There are an amazing number of sites to visit and explore (mostly free). Come and learn more!
