Join us as we discuss Hitler's Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields, a National Book Award finalist by historian Wendy Lower. The book focuses on the variety of women’s roles in Nazi Germany, a topic very little has been written about.
Lower focuses on women who went east into Poland, Belarus and other conquered territories as nurses, teachers, secretaries and wives. Writing about several particular women and their stories, the author he asks difficult questions about what German women’s part in the genocide was and how we might need to rethink our understanding of how the Nazi state worked. She organizes the book into women who are witness, accomplices and perpetrators of violence in the Third Reich.
Reading the book ahead of time is strongly encouraged, but all are welcome.
