A poet and performer known for his political edge, Essex Hemphill openly addressed race, identity, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and the family in his work, voicing issues central to the African American gay community.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, local poets Regie Cabico, Philip Clark, and Michelle Parkerson will present a tribute to the life and work of Essex Hemphill.
