Date:

Poster for the Film Beauty in TruthSaturday, April 19, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  In honor of April of National Poetry Month 2014, poetry lovers of the Shepherd Park community will gather in the morning to watch part of the biographical study of Alice Walker on the PBS American Masters Series, entitled “Beauty in Truth.” We will only show the first twenty minutes and then initiate a discussion by group participation: everyone will be asked to read selected poems within the body of her work.

Then we will discuss the kind of poetry Alice Walker practices, a poetry that is often described as "the practice of ingenious common people who make a patchwork quilt using nearby materials to form a beautiful pattern affirming life."  Finally, we will discuss how this kind of poetics may have relevance in our everyday lives.
