April's Book Club Selection

'The Icarus Girl' by Helen Oyeyemi

Cover image of Helen Oyeyemi's fiction debut, The Icarus GirlJessamy Harrison is 8 years old. Born of a Nigerian mother and English father, her solitary tendencies have her school mates and her parents worried. Sent to Nigeria for the first time to visit with her extended family where her parents hope she will feel better, she quickly becomes friends with Tilly Tilly, who is also eight.

But Tilly Tilly isn’t what she appears to be.

Interweaving her own biculturalism and drawing on Nigerian mythology for this her first novel, Oyeyemi demonstrates why she was included in the 2013 Granta Best of Young British Novelists list.

The book club will meet to discuss The Icarus Girl on Thursday, April 24 in Conference Room 1 at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Ana Elisa at anaelisa.decampossalles@dc.gov or call 202-671-3122.
