Graphic Novel Club Goes to Vaudeville

The Graphic Novel Book Club had a blast from the past this month. Discussing Bluffton by Matt Phelan, we dug deeper into the life of Buster Keaton and the hijinks of vaudeville. Set in a small town where Buster and other vaudevillians would stay for the summer, Bluffton is about Buster’s life as seen from an outsider’s perspective, the perspective of a young resident of Bluffton, Henry. To Henry, growing up in vaudeville seems ideal, but does he really know what it’s like?

There were quite a few funny parts that members pointed out during our discussion. You can’t have a graphic novel with Buster Keaton without including some of his antics.

After the discussion, we all posed for photos reminiscent of Buster Keaton’s brilliant career in silent movies. Using exaggerated emotional expressions, since Buster’s movies had no words, the kids used costumes and facial cues to “tell their story.” See below for some of the results.

The Graphic Novel Book Club meets Monthly, and new members are always welcome! This month, the Graphic Novel Book Club will be meeting on Wednesday, April 30th at 4:00 pm to discuss Astronaut Academy: Reentry by Dave Roman.
