'The House of Mirth'

Georgetown Book Club's June Selection

The House of MirthThe Georgetown Book Club is celebrating the first month of DC Public Library's Adult Summer Reading program, Literary Elements, by recalling traditional summer reading lists and assigning ourselves a classic novel: The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

Selected as the Georgetown Book Club's classic of choice via an online poll earlier this year, The House of Mirth follows socialite Lily Bart, who must marry advantageously to ensure her own security and status. Aware of what is expected of her yet attracted to less successful peer Lawrence Selden, Lily struggles, and her difficulties--along with the behavior of those around her--illuminate the quiet harshness of upper class life in Gilded Age New York City.

Join the Georgetown Book Club as we discuss The House of Mirth on Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. Copies are currently available at the Georgetown Neighborhood Library, and everyone is welcome!
