"Dawn" by Octavia Butler
Published on Sunday, June 1, 2014 - 1:28pm
Lilith lyapo awakens in a room without windows, where voices speak to her from a mysteriously lighted ceiling. But she is not mad. She is a captive.
Her jailers are the Oankali, an alien race who has taken it on themselves to save humanity from a war-torn, dying earth, much as humanity once felt responsible for saving condors or tigers. After many years of studying Lilith, the Oankali tell her that she is to be the new go-between for humans and aliens. She is to explain to them the new rules of living on earth... including the fact that humans can no longer procreate without an Oankali go-between.
