Maya AngelouThe DC Public Library celebrates the life and work of Maya Angelou, who died today at age 86. A poet, author, dancer, and civil rights activist, Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographical works, which began with 1969's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. In addition to a Pulitzer Prize nomination for her book of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie, Angelou was also awarded a National Medal of Arts, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and more than 50 honorary degrees.
