Our Summer Reading Program “Fizz, Boom, Read!” started with an innovative program in partnership with the very talented artist and educator, Karen Brown of Class Acts Arts.
Thanks to grant funding from the LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) for the DC Public Library, the Lamond-Riggs Library was able to be one of the libraries that hosted programs encouraging a broader awareness of S.T.E.A.M.
S.T.E.A.M. is an innovative educational concept that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & design, and Math in K-20 education.
On Monday, June 2, a class from Roots, using brightly colored card-stock paper, produced exquisite creations that reinforce math curriculum ideas from simple patterns, symmetry, and shapes all the way up to fractions and geometry.
Participants were able to implement mathematical concepts such as symmetry and fractions in creating an art project with roots in the science of insects.
The individual “quilt” squares created will be on display in the library for the public to enjoy.
