A Drum Roll for Children's Summer Reading at Southwest Library
Published on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 - 12:22pm
The Summer Reading Program started off with a drum roll when Southwest Library welcomed Andres and Hector from popular local children's band Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres. Andres led a group of over 100 children and their parents and caregivers on a singing, dancing journey through the countries of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. We had a lot of fun and learned some new things--including how to sing "The Eeensy Weensy Spider en Espanol!
DC Public Library's summer reading theme is "Fizz, Boom, Read" and the Southwest Library will be offering several S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) opportunities.
Science in the Summer, a hour-long, 4-day, science activity program sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and the Association of American Scientists, will begin Monday, July 7th. This year's theme is Bioscience, and a session will be offered for rising 2nd & 3rd graders, as well as for rising 4th-6th graders. Pre-registration is required, so please contact the library at 202-724-4752 for more details.
Almost 200 children have signed up to record their reading this summer, and it's not too late to sign up! Thanks to the generosity of our Summer Reading Program partners, the Washington Nationals, we are able to offer a voucher for 2 Nationals tickets to every child ages 6-12 who completes the Summer Reading Program by reading for at least 8 hours. They will also receive a free book and an entry in our raffle to win a Kindle Fire. "Beaker Breaker" readers who really want to challenge themselves can read for at least 20 more hours and enter an additional raffle to attend a special lunch with area children's authors and illustrators.
We haven't forgotten the little ones! For ages 0-5, we are offering a Read-to-Me Summer Reading Program. Complete the activities on our game board with your child and they can win age-appropriate prizes as well, including a Chipotle kids' meal (or a rubber duck for ages 0-2) and a free picture book. Families who complete 8 activities will also be entered in a raffle to receive a basket full of picture books. Happy Reading!
