Audio Storytelling Workshop

Learn the basics of audio storytelling! The workshop will consist of three one-hour classes meeting once a week for three consecutive weeks in the Digital Commons. 

We encourage every student to come to each class, as the information will be cumulative. By the end of the course, every participant will produce a short piece to share with the DC Public Library community. Please email peter.timko@dc.gov, or walk into the Digital Commons to sign up.  

Week One - Wednesday, Nov. 4:

Interviewing Basics

This class teaches students how to conduct the perfect interview. Students will listen to examples of well-conducted interviews, learn tricks and techniques to asking great questions, and have a chance to practice interviewing each other.
 

Week Two - Tuesday, Nov. 10:

Editing Basics

This class introduces students to the various forms of audio storytelling and learn the basic technical skills needed to record and edit audio work. This class will cover using recording equipment like digital recorders and smartphone apps. It will also cover the basic functions of Audacity. After this class, students should begin recording and editing their audio piece.. Students will also listen to samples including books on tape, radio dramas, reporting, creative non-fiction, and more. 


Week Three - Tuesday, Nov. 17:

Editing Workshop

Students will bring their audio in for an extended workshop session. Not a formal class, everyone just works on their project. The instructor will be troubleshooting, working through problems, and providing guidance and technical support.
