Spotlight on New Teen Reads: "Pointe" by Brandy Colbert

Pointe by Brandy Colbert

Pointe by Brandy ColbertTheo is a ballerina who one day hopes to dance professionally.  She’s eating well and seeing someone, until her friend Donovan returns after being kidnapped for four years.  As the trial for Donovan’s abductor draws close, Donovan won’t talk, and Theo’s afraid of what will happen if she does. Theo must decide which is worse—telling the truth or not.

Debut author Colbert  tackles a handful of heavy subjects here, which works because she does a nice job of balancing them and tying different plot threads together.   The story is well-written and fast-paced, but what makes it most enjoyable is Theo.  She’s a strong African American female and the reader watches her grow as she tries to rebuild her friendship with Donovan and strives to be a better dancer.  Pointe is the perfect novel for readers who love serious contemporary.
