Black Voices Book Club

With the discussion of Octavia Butler's novel Kindred, the Black Voices Book Club members ended the study of slavery at different periods in the United States. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, which deals with slavery in the 1940's, was discussed in April. The Known World by Edward P. Jones, which explored slavery in 1855 (just before the Civil War) was read and discussed in May. Finally, Kindred by Octavia Butler, which took members on a wild exploration of slavery in the antebellum times (early 1800's), was read and discussed in June. Members are already reading the classic novel, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, for the July 19 discussion at 7:00pm. New members are welcome to join at any time. Please call (202)541-6100 for more information.
