A book in hand is a great complement to web-based tutorials and hands-on computer training. The library has an extensive collection of books on computer programs, which can be reserved online or browsed at Dewey call numbers 005.52 - 005.7, or ask a librarian for help.

Learning Express Library
Learning Express Library offers more than 30 self-paced courses on computer skills/programs typically required by employers (Adobe, Access, Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio, SharePoint, Windows & Mac). An extra benefit is that courses are available for commonly used versions of each program (2003, 2007, 2008). You must have a library card to access this courses from home.

Job and Career Accelerator
Job and Career Accelerator offers interactive wizards that help explore occupations, find jobs, prepare resumes, complete job applications and improve job search skills. You can also build a personalized job search portfolio that allows you to plan, and track multiple job searches while providing easy access to all of your saved information. Learning Express Library also offers over 60 interactive computer training courses on computer skills/programs typically required by employers (Adobe, Access, Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Windows & Mac). Occupation practice tests and skills tutorials are also available.

Testing and Education Reference Center
TERC offeres detailed information on colleges, technical schools, practice entrance exams and certifications, and professional license exams. Users can explore career choices, assess their likes, determine their abilities and strengths, measure their interests, build a web-based resume, create a cover letter, research specific job salaries, and map a career path to occupations most suitable to their goals. Each course offers review and tests to help you prepare for state licensing and certification exams in professions like: 

Medical Assisting
Cosmetology — 6 subjects, in both English and Spanish
Auto Repair — (ASE) with 9 exams both in English and Spanish
Medium/Heavy Truck Repair — with 8 exams
Collision Repair — with 5 exams both in English and Spanish

Free, Self-Paced Training Courses from Microsoft Office
Microsoft provides free intro courses to its full suite of products (available in 2003, 2007, and 2010 formats), plus a great collection of tutorials to highlight advanced features and special effects. After you're up to speed on the basics, deepen your knowledge on pivot tables, fly-in animation, and everything in between.

Computer Courses at the Library
Visit DC Public Library's training labs to receive free, hands-on instruction in the computer class of your choice. The majority of classes are offered on a walk-in basis (no registration required, except where indicated) and filled on a first-come, space available basis. Note that when searching in the library's online calendar for classes, pay particular attention to the class location, so you show up at the right place!
